ARTWORK. Painting, drawing, etching, artist books
Paintings that evoke a sense of place and a joy of mark making.
“Time Out” an exhibition at Leichhardt Library, 23 Norton Street, Leichhardt, NSW Australia in March 2020. The work is based on 1940s restaurant crockery, starting with my father in law’s Tamworth “Aroney’s Fish restaurant.

A flock of galahs and two cockatoos in a gumtree coloured by sunset. Grey, iridescent skies. The birds are loosely brushed on a subtle iridescent background that changes with the direction of light.
Bright orange strokes of colour radiate out into a blue and brown background.

I was thinking of how crockery is always waiting for use.

Drawing can be so immediate. It can evoke a sense of place and a mood. It is often fresher than a more considered painting. Drawing is where I have fun and try out ideas.

Printmaking is another playful media where subjects experience new vigour because of the different mark making. I’ve really enjoyed how the atmospheric effects add to the emotional impact of woodshed interiors.

I’ve been enamoured by the woolsheds of western NSW, especially the interiors for a lot of years now. In October 2013 at the Incinerator Art Space, Willoughby, I exhibited paintings of interiors of woolsheds called Cathedrals of Wood – Painting In Woolsheds. I have not abandoned the subject, but have been working on other themes more.
These woolsheds have been built over a hundred years ago from available timber, each one is unique and fascinating. In the paintings, empty space contrasts with complex patterning of supports and yards. Light drawn through open walls and irregular timbers produce intriguing patterns. The wood, mellowed through age and contact with sheep, is a feature – rough sawn red gum at Kinchega and pine saplings at Mungo, but each is distinctive and beautiful.

Pentacost Riverbank
Conceived during our travelling and taken from drawings and photographs this concertina book Pentacost Riverbank was exhibited as part of one+2 artist studio Gallery’s Rock, Paper Plant Exhibition.
It has two painted sides: the first a panorama based on the trees found beside the Pentacost River during our stay there. The second are small vignettes of parts of the drawings in monochrome, with notes as to the species.
